Who Am I in Christ
“Who am I in Christ?”
“It is finished!”
When Jesus uttered these words right before he gave up the ghost and died, it was not a proclamation of His defeat, it was a victorious affirmation that the purpose and will of God for which He had been sent was perfectly secured and finished on our behalf.
It is from this starting point that I want to teach you what it means to be "in Christ" and the divine exchange which took place at the Cross between Jesus Christ and all who would believe. (John 19:30 (NKJV) So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. )
“He is risen!"
After Mary had gone to the tomb where they had buried the Lord and there encountered an angel instead that informed her Jesus was risen, that divine proclamation the angel announced was the attesting miracle that confirmed and validated everything Jesus had set out to say and do and it is that resurrection power that assures all who would believe that if we will simply believe in Christ’s finished work we can be born again and live eternally blessed with Christ both here on Earth and later on in Glory. (Matt 28:5 (NKJV) But the angel answered and said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. (6) "He is not here; for He is risen , as He said.) (Romans 1:16 (NKJV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.)
“It is finished!” That statement affirmed that the plan of salvation was secured and that Jesus had paid it all, "He is risen!" attest that this miracle is complete and God received the payment for our debt and it is paid in full . Together these statements validate the power of God according to His will and purpose and there is nothing left except for you to believe - that is salvation!
Whereas there was only 3 days between these 2 events for me it seemed to have taken me years before I fully understood all that transpired and in an effort to simplify your walk I want to teach you this lesson, in other words, I want to answer the one question you might have thought of namely,
Who am I in Christ?
When I first accepted the Lord I had many more questions than I could find answers for and since I didn’t have a mentor and mainly learned by searching the Word on my own, it took me years before I really had a grasp of all that had transpired and who I really was in Christ.
It was both glorious and frustrating.
Glorious in that slowly God revealed to me gems, priceless jewels found in His Word that enriched me but frustrating in that I was looking for a picture, a level of understanding that would give me a broad picture of what the Bible said. I guess the best way to describe it was that not unlike assembling a large jig saw puzzle. I wanted to see a grand picture first and simply looking closely at each piece was not accomplishing what I had hoped for, at least not for a long time and without a lot of work, looking at the parts didn’t give me a picture of the whole. I wasn’t looking for an easy way to understand as much as I wanted to see the grand overall picture first then look at the pieces while in reality what I had were seemingly unrelated pieces in search of the grand picture, this to me was frustrating. It was that lack of understanding that drove me to seek.
I didn’t know it at the time but I was seeking to understand “Grace”, I just didn’t know that was what it was called.
If you have been there this lesson is meant to give you the grand picture from which you can understand the pieces that will follow.
To me once I saw the grand picture of Grace the pieces started quickly falling into place and so did my understanding which began to soar and that is what I hope to share with you.
Now the way we are going to do this is simply by me giving you a series of points that the Holy Spirit has taught me that collectively will give you an understanding of the masterpiece God painted when He conceived and brought about His Great Salvation.
Think of it as these are the broad strokes of this priceless masterpiece with you adding the details as you interact with the promises underlying those broad strokes and as you come to own the promises of God for yourselves, as I did, you will see this masterpiece. And it is glorious!!!
So where to begin?
I guess at the beginning, before there was anything when there was only the Triune God and nothing else existed.
The Triune God.
There are 3 persons of the Godhead and we refer to this as the Triune God also referred to as the Trinity though either term doesn’t appear anywhere in the Bible. Whereas this subject can encompass countless volumes I am going to share with you how God explained it to me in light of His salvation. When He showed me this, it was an eye opening experience in that the simplicity with which He taught me was much deeper than anything I had ever seen previously. I guess He was waiting for me to come to the end of myself so He could begin to show me the beginning of who He is. I love the humor of that!
The three persons of the Godhead are God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. When it comes to salvation this is how they interact collectively on behalf of humanity.
Father God conceived and purposed Salvation before the existence of anything that exists, He called His Son and named Him Salvation and it is Jesus who was tasked with securing that Salvation. The Holy Spirit now applies the Salvation Jesus secured to accomplish the will and purpose of Father God.
The Great Plan of Salvation, Grace, the unmerited favor of God speaks to God’s sovereignty in that He willed it by His own holy authority in order to deal with the Sin that had condemned mankind to eternal damnation and separation from his Creator.
Be assured there is no greater authority than Father God’s. If you learn nothing else be assured that His will and purpose will triumph, He is victorious in this and ALL His plans.
Jesus Christ did not come to do His own will but rather His Father’s will and the result of that secured eternal salvation for all who would receive Him.
The subsequent outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost birthed the Body of Christ, the Church, but the Holy Spirit didn’t come to do His will either but rather Jesus’ with the end result being that the will of the Father through Christ is applied to us who believe by the Holy Spirit and we are saved not just spiritually but in any and all situations. Grace not only covered a multitude of sin it provided abundantly ALL the riches in Glory by Christ Jesus!
Whereas the 3 persons of the Godhead are equal, they each have a different function as to salvation and never, ever will one of them do anything contrary to the other, the will of the Father or His Word.
All three are in agreement all the time.
Therefore the definition of the Triune God as it pertains to salvation for humanity can be expressed as follows:
Father purposed Salvation, Jesus secured it and the Holy Spirit applies it, the Triune God.
These are the broad strokes I want to begin with painted in Red on this universal canvas, His masterpiece displayed on the Cross.
So you might think that is just too simple.
It really is that simple once God explains it as are many of the things of God which explains why we miss so much of it. We need to go back and approach the Word of God with childlike simplicity and there is where God will reveal the unfathomable mysteries and the depths of His Word.
Far too many times the things of God go right over our heads but if we go back to the Word and seek then here is where God reveals intimately to us what is on His heart and mind, that my friends is the act of seeking. What are the results?
Jeremiah answers that for us in one of my favorite verses, Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV) 'Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'
This is how He taught me not only the contents you will read here but also how to write the lesson as well, to Him be the glory!
Do not confuse simplicity with lack of depth; doing so would be a grave mistake.
Another thing I want to make clear at the onset is that if I have learned anything it is that the extent with which God reveals to us His mysteries is not limited by His desires to keep them hid, it is limited by our desires to seek them out. In other words, we are not willing to pay the price to find them!
He desires to reveal much more than we are willing to seek.
So what exactly you might ask is the definition of seek?
I thought I knew till I looked it up in a dictionary. Seek is a proactive search, a craving, as in to beg. It isn’t a casual search, it is highly focused and intense and given the seriousness of the issues we are dealing with here, and which will have eternal consequence one way or another, it would be wise to seek habitually!
Notice what Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) says, But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
In other words, crave, aggressively pursue, search proactively the kingdom of God which speaks as to the manner, methodology as to how God operates, how he does things, do that and ALL these things, needs, will be added to you. Furthermore, God will then supply OUT OF HIS RICHES and not our limited view. Rather than asking for the need to be met ask for His Will to be done, you will see spectacular results.
That is to Seek with the corresponding results and we will revisit this later as well.
Now let me also say this early enough in this study so that there are no misunderstandings, God taught me this lesson I am writing and it took Him many years which is more evidence that some of us are slower to grasp the things of our God than others! All I am doing is typing out what He deposited within me so you can have the blessings that follow, to God be the Glory, no one else. I am only your servant, He is the Author! (Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.) I am just the typist who along with the Holy Spirit and spell check has produced this work.
The Word of God.
So the next question I want to address is what exactly is the Word of God and how does it fit with the Father’s will and purpose regarding His Great Salvation?
The Word of God is His Story.
Note that I spelled it as two separate words, His Story, rather than as one, History.
Make no mistake about it Jesus Christ is the centerpiece of the entire Word of God from Genesis through Revelation. Jesus appears either in shadows or through revelation in every single book of the Bible and it is all for His glory that the Word was revealed. He is the Word, there is no distinction between the two Jesus and the Word are one and the same.
It is really very simple, the Old Testament is Jesus concealed in shadows the New Testament is Jesus revealed as the Light of the World.
Be assured that the entire Word is all about Jesus. (John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us we have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son , who came from the Father, full of grace and truth .)
Yes, the Bible contains history and poetry, prophecies and revelations but it is all about Jesus Christ and if we were to define the center of all that transpired within the pages of His Story the center of all of it is at the Cross God’s crowning act of Salvation secured according to His Will and Purpose and the 2 most important statements arising from that event are, It is finished!, He is risen!
What is the central theme shown repeatedly throughout the Word?
1Timothy 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, (4) who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (5)For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
God desires that all men be saved and the one and only person whose work God will accept as payment for that salvation is Jesus Christ who is the Grace and Truth.
John 3:16 (NKJV) “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (17) For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (18) He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
Think on this for a moment, in verse 16 there are 5 simple words that describe God’s attitude towards people, namely, God so loved… He gave.
The totality of His attitude towards us can be summed up with the expression of His desires to give.
Give us what?
Everything in abundance!
Salvation, from the Greek word Sózó needs to be understood by all of us to the depth that God intended and not simply thinking of salvation as an escape from hell and access to heaven. To limit our thoughts and understanding to that level robs us of the value of what Jesus did on the Cross and cheapens His work through the limits we place through our incorrect understanding and beliefs.
From Strong’s Greek Concordance: Sózó 4982: “to save , keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction one (from injury or peril) to save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease , to make well , heal , restore to health to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue to save in the technical biblical sense negatively; to deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment ; to save from the evils which obstruct the reception of the Messianic deliverance .” [4982 (s ṓ zō) is the root of: 4990 /sōt ḗ r ("Savior"), 4991 /sōtēría ("salvation") and the adjectival form, 4992 /sōt ḗ rion (what is "saved/rescued from destruction and brought into divine safety").]
So notice this first point, “Sózó” is the root of Savior, therefore by definition if I learn nothing else I know that if I understand what “Sózó” means I will see a clearer picture of who my Savior is.
Jesus Christ, the Grace of God towards man, Savior, came not to judge but to save us, keep us safe, heal, restore, deliver, prosper, bless, and give us an inheritance, ALL the riches in glory to make us righteous, give rest, peace and many more promises found in God’s Word .
That is what salvation means, what it encompasses and you need to remember it as such.
Therefore we can rightly say that God desires to give to us, everything in abundance in all areas of our life!
What is abundance?
I define it as having more than enough to satisfy your needs. It isn’t barely having, it is having more than you need so there is some left over. Case in point, Jesus fed 5,000 with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. And when everyone was filled and satisfied, they still had an excess left over of 12 baskets! (Mark 6 :36-43)
God gives not only out of His riches in abundance but He gives His best all the time, this is the picture of Grace, unmerited favor.
When God chose The Name above all names, His choosing of Jesus literally means “Jehovah is Salvation.” And having secured this at the Cross is why Jesus is called the Christ of God which means “the anointed one” who secured it who three days later arose from the grave in full demonstration of the power of God.
Therefore we can say most assuredly that God named His Son Salvation and we are correct in that regard. Furthermore, His name defines who He is, what He did and what He will do for each of us in the future… save!
That is what Jesus has done for you and me and all who would believe.
His salvation encompasses every single facet of our lives, spiritually, physically, emotionally, financially, healing, and restoration.
We will address this again as we go on.
Law and Grace .
Within the Word of God there are 2 covenants, one of the Law and one of Grace. If you are born again you are no longer under the Law , you are under Grace.
What exactly is the definition of Grace?
It means that God gave you a gift, unmerited favor.
Grace is not a teaching or theological concept; it is a person, Jesus Christ, God’s gift to save you. (John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Now let me be honest with you. I had a hard time understanding this at first especially in light of all I knew about me!!!
You too might be thinking, man I have led a sinful life, too sinful for God to forgive me or you might already be saved and in light of your failures you might think, surely God is disappointed with me he will never use me!
Let’s talk about this…
As for being a disappointment, God has never been nor will He ever be disappointed in you ever!
He knew everything about you to begin with and he wasn’t expecting anything from you. Let’s be real folks, after all we were made from dirt, how much can you really expect from dirt other than mud if you add water!
See, disappointment speaks as to expecting something from someone and they then let you down. It comes about as a result of unfulfilled or unrealistic expectations.
Well as for God, in reality He never expected anything from us to begin with therefore He can’t be disappointed. Now I know some of you might just have had your pride crushed but that is the reality.
As for Grace in light of your sinful past let me say this. God’s Grace far exceeds the totality of ALL your past, present and future sins, failures, guilt and shame!
Here is how He taught me this lesson to explain it to others…
The Bible says that where “sin abounded, grace much more abound”. Since this comparison is relative between sin and Grace, God explained it to my mind in a way I could comprehend and teach others.
If all your sins past, present and future could be demonstrated say by the fire produced by a small wooden match, think of Grace then as the totality of all the water in the Earth that drowns that fire and when that has been applied, God would then pour out abundantly much more water on top of that! That is the picture of Grace!
Using a match to illustrate the expression of sin is not to trivialize the deadly nature of sin which will kill, but rather that by comparison Grace can be seen and magnified as much more exalted and gloriously able to forgive even a prince of sinners of which you could be one! Look at what the Apostle Paul said, 1 Timothy 1:15 this is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Thinking you can’t be forgiven is incorrect thinking on your part. There is NOTHING that Grace can’t handle, matter of fact, it already did.
That is the thought expressed in the translation when looking at in Greek and that is how God taught me Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
(21) That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
How clear this is. Sin and its effect, death, is overcome by the Living Water and the result is life everlasting and abundantly. Whereas previously we were separated from Our Creator and Heavenly Father, we are now reconciled to Him and have been made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus; that is Grace abounding and that Grace existed before anything existed, that is the essence of the invisible God come in the flesh, Jesus Christ!
2 Corinthians 5:18(KJV) And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; (19) To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. (20) Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God (21) For he hath made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
By one act at the Cross God secured life for those who would believe and receive His Son and the end result was we have become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus!
This is the new nature we now have which Grace has made available to all who would likewise receive.
John 3:16 (ESV) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
No matter what you have done, God’s Grace is more than enough to save you!
Think on this.
Jesus has ALREADY paid the price of salvation for every living being that will ever exist. The issue isn’t will Jesus die for you, the issue is, He already has, and will you accept this?
Law vs. Grace
So what is the difference between the two covenants, the Law and Grace?
You do not have to observe the Law to secure God’s favor , Christ did that for us as we were incapable of doing it for ourselves, and that is Grace so when you accept Jesus, you have fulfilled the Law through Him, not of yourself, that is God’s favor.
Jesus Christ is the favor of God given to us and that favor includes every single promise in the Word as being ours, those are the riches in glory that He wants us to experience here on Earth now and in Glory thereafter. That is the essence of the graciousness of Our Father; he gave us a Gift whose Word saves us time and time again from every situation we can think of.
Please understand this. As for being born again, that is a single one time event that occurs once you receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Once you are saved IT IS FOREVER and you cannot lose your salvation simply because you are NOT the one that secured it, but as to everything else, we will need constant saving in other areas that Jesus is supremely qualified and passionately desiring to do for us as well. That is how salvation continues to be alive and interacting with us daily through the Holy Spirit who is applying through the Word the salvation secured.
Think on this for a moment, the events at the Cross which took place over 2,000 years ago still are as powerful now as then. This is Father’s Great Salvation!
Here is how did God taught me this.
Now this is very important so pay attention or re-read it till you get it, it is rich!
Jesus is the Word and the same Spirit that created the Universe lives in us, we just need to develop that relationship through faith and simply believe.
God is a Gracious God, he doesn’t simply give me a promise, no, He gives more than that He gives me His Son each time and the Son saves me over and over in each and every area of my life that is the full manifestation of Salvation!!!
When we have a need God doesn’t give you “the thing” you need, He gives you Jesus who being Salvation saves you by giving Himself, the Word, to you and in Him the need is met through Him since His salvation is all inclusive of “everything” we need. In Christ there is no lack, so when you have Him, you have everything. The promises, all of which have His Name, are birthed and that is how the need is met.
This is why He is the great “I AM THAT I AM” the Name God first used to introduce Himself.
What do you need? His response is I AM THAT!
Notice he doesn’t respond by saying, I will give you that…no, his response is I AM THAT!
Then to make sure you understand He affirms it with the highest affirmation God can proclaim as witness that the need will be met.
Who is the witness beyond reproach that God calls on to validate what He promised? His response is …”I AM”
I AM THAT I AM!
Notice, He isn’t saying he will give you “anything” He is saying He will give you ALL because He gives Himself AND THERE IS NO GREATER EVIDENCE of His giving than the Cross, if he didn’t deny you His Son He won’t deny taking care of you as to your other needs ! This is why Jesus died for us!
Now this next point is important, how He provides the need, well that speaks to His Sovereignty which is why He is the Lord but that He will do it speaks to His integrity which speaks to His character.
If I have learned nothing else, God has always taken care of me but not once in the manner I imagined He would. His care for me though somewhat incomprehensible at times has always been more than I imagined and with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight it turned out better than what I thought and was more than I needed but always came about in a manner unexpectantly!
If lack in any area, regardless of the area, equates to poverty and abundance in any area equates to riches then this scripture should help you understand what I am saying.
2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.
It is so simple it is profoundly deep and most won’t get it unless Jesus reveals it to you.
Whenever there is a need, God desires to exchange our poverty in that area for His riches! This in one sentence is the crux of what took place at the Cross and the Divine Exchange and applies to EVERY AREA OF OUR LIVES! This is His Great Salvation at work, a vibrant, active, ongoing intimacy deeper than any of us ever thought or imagined. It started when we accepted the events that took place at the Cross and this salvation continued now and forever in relationship to Him!
That is Grace at work.
Are you getting this?
If God did not withhold His Most Precious Son from us to insure eternal salvation why would He withhold things of a lesser temporal value from us to save us from any lack we might have thereafter?
Look at the Word, John 10:10(b) … I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. Jesus came that we might have life abundantly, not life in lack!
“The Things” we chase after and have made idols of and worship and lust after won’t satisfy our needs nor bring everlasting rest and peace should you attain them by strife. I have been there, it doesn’t work! Ultimately all the idols become dust. All crumble and fall. All of them will disappoint.
But seek first the kingdom of God and all its righteousness and ALL these “things” will be added on to you. When Jesus taught me this, then I understood at a much deeper level that the Lord is my shepherd, I shall lack NOTHING! Through Him I received that which I sought but now through Him I was satisfied and at peace and rest as well, I no longer had to strive for it.
This is how salvation continues to save us once we have been saved not by getting “things” but by getting a deeper more intimate revelation of Jesus, Our Savior!
When God purposed salvation and Jesus secured it and the Holy Spirit applies it, it is a Great Salvation because it is ALL inclusive.
Chase Jesus, seek Him, crave a relationship then ALL our needs are met!
Do you need healing? Jesus doesn’t give you healing He IS healing, that is how He saves you from diseases and illnesses. I have experience this divine healing three times in my life when I almost died I didn’t simply get the healing I got more of Him intimately and through that deeper experience the Living Word birthed His promise and by his stripes I was healed because His presence in me was magnified and predominant and the Living Word applied healing from within. I chased Him relentlessly; yet it was He who caught me, comforted me and healed me over and over and over again! I should have died so many times yet I am in Christ and I am alive over and over and over again!
Do you understand what I am saying? I sure hope so.
Do you need a financial miracle? Jesus doesn’t give you the money you need, He IS Prosperity and came that you might have Life and life More Abundantly and God brings through Him all the riches in Glory by Christ Jesus that is your financial salvation, God’s riches in glory come to us here on Earth through. The Living Word birthed His promise and I received abundance because His presence in me was magnified and predominant and the Living Word applied prosperity and I believed, he then turned circumstances in my favor. I have literally believed for in excess of $10 million in sales this way. On another occasion in a 2 day period I made $49,000 in commissions. Don’t tell me this isn’t a practical lesson or that it doesn’t have real life applications. I once needed a car and though I went to the car dealer, Jesus told me not to buy it there showed me a better way, I obeyed, sowed my seed where he told me to and received not only a car for free but a $12,000 a year increase in my salary at the same time. I believed within me that He would provide and that belief changed my circumstances and the provision came about, that is unmerited favor that is Grace applied.
Here is how the Holy Spirit taught me in simplicity to teach others.
Our belief is what interacts with the Spirit of this Great Salvation within us that God then uses to change the circumstances in our favor. Our belief, in agreement with the Word, is what the Holy Spirit is waiting for in order to apply Father’s promises secured by Christ. That God will always do it in His perfect timing, and not ours, speaks to His Sovereignty, that He Himself has obligated Himself to do it speaks as to His character which ALWAYS honors His Son’s work at the Cross. Now I understood Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Belief is what produces the outward evidence of the inner Christ and Jesus’ promises in the Word ALWAYS produce salvation.
I believed in Jesus (He is in me) healing came to my body (outward evidence of His promise) I was saved (Father’s Great Salvation at work).
I believed in Jesus (He is in me) prosperity came to my body (outward evidence of His promise) I was saved (Father’s Great Salvation at work).
Over and over again, because Jesus is in me, my belief in Him; produces the outward manifestation, the outward evidence of Father’s great Salvation, time and time again!
It is that simple yet so profound that unless God reveals this to you, you will miss it. Go back and study it Holy Spirit again till you get it. God taught me this one line in this lesson and he showed to me for weeks at a time before the reality changed my life, what He did for me, He will do for you!
Now that I have your attention, listen, this lesson is deep but also very practical as Jesus desires and He is energized when He can come and save us again and again.
God named His Son Salvation, it is all inclusive of any need you might have not because of the “things” you get but rather because you get a greater and deeper intimacy with Jesus and if you have Jesus at this level of intimacy, that level of Grace, you don’t need anything ALL the “things” through Him will be added unto you.
Now this next point is very important so read it carefully.
When you let go of what you need and replace it for “the want of Jesus solely for Him and NOT the thing” then Jesus saves but if you hold on to “the want of your need and make the “thing” your savior”, Jesus can’t save because you have replaced Him … think about how successful that has been for you! How is it working out for you as your own savior…Hmmmm… ?
There is only room for either a Savior who saves or you… which one will save you?
God is literally waiting for us to have this revelation acted upon and when it happens, and I know it will there will be a revolution within the Body of Christ of epic proportions.
How will it come about?
The same simple childlike faith that resulted when you first believed and were born again is the same simple childlike faith you can act upon again to believe for everything else you need by becoming more intimate, not pursuing things.
This is Grace, the favor of God and His Great and Awesome Salvation whose name is Jesus Christ.
I hope you do so you too can say,
I realize this isn’t a simple concept but we will come back again to this later.
Understand this as it is very important.
God gave us a gift, Grace, we cannot do anything to attain the Gift, we can’t work for it for then it would be a debt He owes to us rather than a gift He gives to us and be most assured, God owes no one anything!
So then why did God give us the law first, isn’t that adequate as well?
God gave the Law whose foundation is the 10 commandments not as a means by which we are to live by but rather to show us the way, to point to Jesus Christ as the ONLY way to salvation. (John 14:6 (NKJV) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.)
Although the Law is holy it was never God’s intent for man to live by it since sinful man is incapable of meeting the requirements of the holy Law and the only one who has ever has done so is Jesus who came to fulfill it for us (Matthew 5:17 (NKJV) “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill) .
None of us can meet the Law requirements because our sinful nature with which we come into this world will always hamper any of our efforts to attain the righteousness of God. To do so would negate the Cross and be assured, if you learn nothing else in this study, God will never, ever, ever allow anything to negate His Son on the Cross!
Think on this, God would never, ever give us a standard based on our sin so that we can meet that standard, no; He gave a holy standard we can’t meet which is why Grace came to save.
This Grace of Jesus on the Cross was a gift from God to us, unmerited favor, we can’t earn it, we can’t achieve it, and we simply believe and receive this gift to God be the Glory, never to man.
John 1:17 says, For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
The reason that Grace is superior to the Law can be seen in this one verse. Notice that the Law was given by a servant of God whereas Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ, the Son is always superior to the servant and when the Son became a Servant the Glory of God was shown to man Salvation at the Cross and this gift, this unmerited favor, this glorious Amazing Grace, made those who would believe to be the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus! (2Co 5:21 (NKJV) For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.)
Grace is therefore a Gift, for it to require us to achieve it would mean that we would then share in Christ’s glory for salvation and I assure you that will never, ever be the case whether we are preaching the greatest sermon ever preached or teaching the greatest lesson ever taught regardless of what we do Christ through us is the power of God not man’s effort therefore God’s glory will never, ever be shared. (Isaiah 42:8 (NKJV) I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.)
Furthermore, notice that Truth in the aforementioned verse is on the side of Grace not under the Law. Is this to say the law is not truthful? Not at all, it is to say that the only way to salvation is through Jesus since the Law would demand it be kept by man which can’t be so. (John 14:6 (NKJV) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.)
Other comparisons between the Law and Grace are as follows:
The Law demands righteousness from man but does nothing to help him achieve it. Under Grace God imparts righteousness to man through the Gift of Grace and the finished work of Jesus Christ which accomplishes it for man ( Romans 4:5 (NKJV) But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly , his faith is accounted for righteousness, (6) just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works : (7) "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; (8) Blessed is the man to whom the LORD shall not impute sin.)
The Law says, you owe me, Grace says, I cancel ALL your debts!
The Law speaks of what man must do for God. Grace tells of what Christ has done for man.
The Law addresses man as part of the old creation. Grace makes a man a member of the new creation.
People fool heartedly attempt to modify their behavior in a self righteous attempt to conform to the Law. This is a temporary solution at best since there is no heart transformation at its core, whereas under Grace the Love of God overflows our hearts and changes us and in gratitude as an expression of this transformed heart, we produce good works motivated by the love of God within us, not motivated by obligation as the law requires. (2Co 3:18 (NKJV) But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory , just as by the Spirit of the Lord.) This is the working of the Holy Spirit that is transforming us into the image of Jesus Christ; this is how the Holy Spirit applies under Grace the will of Father and the work secured by Christ for salvation.
The Law is the ministry of death while Grace is the ministry of Jesus’ abundant life.
2 Cor 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, (6) who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter (Law) but of the Spirit (Grace); for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (7) But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones(Law), was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away (Law), (8) how will the ministry of the Spirit (Grace) not be more glorious? (9) For if the ministry of condemnation had glory (Law), the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory (Grace).
Another comparison between the Law and Grace can be seen next and if you get this one in particular it will enhance your prayer life through a deeper intimacy with Father God through Jesus.
Under the Law the children of Israel could not enter the Holy of Holies where the presence of God was manifest. Only the High Priest could do so and only once a year, on the Day of Atonement.
Leviticus 16:2 (NKJV) and the LORD said to Moses: "Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat. (14) Lev 16:14 "He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
Under Grace the veil into the Holy of Holies has been torn in two once and forever. Furthermore because of the blood of Jesus we can come any time since He, Our High Priest, has secured our entrance. Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Furthermore, because of Grace note what the Bible says about us having access to Father God. 1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV) but you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation , His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
Here is how you can pray more effective and powerful prayers. Let me say at the onset that this changed my life and kept me alive and if you get this mindset and pray as I will explain to you it will bless you tremendously.
The Bible says that God created everything created, Colossians (NKJV) 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Lucifer, who is a created being , and under NO circumstance to ever be seen as either equal to or greater than God rebelled and he and his followers were thrown out of heaven.
Although they have been defeated at the Cross (Col 2:15 (NKJV) Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.) they continue to cause troubles.
Well since they can’t defeat God they come against the Body of Christ. Satan’s hatred of God is now aimed at us. (John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.)
If Satan and his minions can steal from us what Jesus purchased then he can literally destroy God’s creation which if you open your eyes you can see evidence of this all around you.
How does he do that?
He is still using the same tactic today as he did when he came up against Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and that tactic is simply coming to his victim and asking, “Did God really say that?”
Bringing doubt and the corresponding fear and death that will result is the same tactic he has used for thousands of years and the reason is that it still works. There is no reason to change it.
I have taught long enough to know that far too many Christians are being defeated regularly because they don’t know the Word. They approach it with a casual attitude that causes no roots to take hold and when disaster strikes, and I assure you that will happen, they are defeated because there is no Word in them to triumph in faith.
Look at this quote from Dwight L. Moody, one of the greatest evangelists of his time who was considered a radical preacher of Grace, “There is plenty of grace. Many Christians, if they have grace enough to keep them from outward sin, seem to be perfectly satisfied; they do not press on to get fullness of grace, so as to be ready for God’s work. Many are satisfied to go into the stream of grace ankle deep, when God wants them to swim in it.”
We are the sons and daughters of the Most High God; we should never, ever be satisfied with anything less than ALL of God’s best rather than settling for just a little bit. Be radical; change your world by Grace!
In addition, many, when they pray come almost like beggars when they should be coming as who they are in Christ but because of a lack of knowledge they are being defeated again for lack of faith based on no foundation in the Word. (Hosea 4:6 (NKJV) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.)
So in prayer you might ask; where is the battle?
The answer is found in Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Spiritual forces affect our natural realm we live in so we must conduct the war in the realm where the enemy is engaged, the spirit.
Prayer is how you engage in spiritual warfare and the Word of God is the main weapon (there is a lesson on this webpage, under "Thoughts of the Day: Paul Ephesians 6 ” ; that goes in depth into spiritual warfare and how to be equipped with the Armor of God.)
Because we are the righteousness of God as I explained earlier which means we have right standing before God and because of Jesus’ finished work therefore in Christ the Word says, Eph 2:18 (NKJV) For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. You have complete and total access, no restrictions because Jesus has given you the key to enter the throne room positionally.
What do I mean by positionally?
We are on Earth doing the will of God as led by the Holy Spirit; that is where we are physically, the natural realm. As to being a believer, Eph 2:6 says (NKJV) we are and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (spiritual realm). But as to access we are seated with Christ in heavenly places. That is where we are positionally regarding spiritual things, we are now and forever in Him.
Where is Jesus seated?
Ephesians 1:20 (NKJV) which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
Because Jesus was seated by God at his right hand and above ALL principality and power and might and dominion and because we positionally are seated together in the heavenly places with Christ, we are seated above just as he is regarding warfare in prayer therefore we can come with a position of strength (Luke 10:19 "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.)
Therefore when we pray according to the Word I may approach Father God with freedom and confidence (Eph 3:12 (NKJV) in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.)
I can pray into the presence of God who is my Father, Abba Daddy, because I have access that Jesus paid for me to have. I am praying from a position of strength, not as a beggar, as I have been given and will exercise the authority Christ has given me over the enemy, I don’t have to put up with his nonsense anymore! I can pray the Word and the promises that are mine because of who I am in Christ and I can believe for them by faith for others as well as for myself. This is my inheritance that my Jesus paid for me to have at great expense and I know that through prayer I can affect changes, Move Mountains with my little mustard seed faith and in Christ I refuse to be defeated, when Satan comes and says, did God really say that? I can respond, "YES HE DID AND I CAN SAY SO AS WELL!"
This is the attitude of effective prayer and coupled with a deep knowledge of the Word, you will triumph!
This came about because of who we are in Christ and you can do this as well.
This is just the beginning of understanding what Grace is.
How did all of this come about and where did it take place?
The Cross – The Divine Exchange
At the Cross, it is there that the divine exchange was made between us and Christ. It is there that Jesus exchanged our abject poverty for His glorious riches.
The Cross is both the centerpiece of His Story as well as history from eternity past to eternity to come.
We will never, ever fully understand all that took place there till the full revelation comes to us of who really hung there .
Oh, we give this lip service and have heard it so often that we have somewhat grown callous to some extent but when the reality hits you that the Sin in your life was so serious that nothing less than God’s son was capable and willing to pay for it rather than having you suffer the eternal consequence, then the reality of the power of the gospel will hit you and that will be the most liberating day of your life. When you realize how much God valued you, how much you are His beloved, it is then you will be transformed as never before!
Recently I bought a Bible that has the translation more in keeping with the Greek which is much richer than our English. (The New Testament: An Expanded Translation by Kenneth S. Wuest, 1961 Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.)
I came across John 10:29 in which He is referring to us as His sheep the New King James Version says:
“My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.”
But in the translation it says:
“My Father gave them to me as a permanent gift!”
Think about that, you and I and all believers are a permanent Gift from Father God to Jesus now if that doesn’t put a smile on your face nothing will.
This is Grace, God gave us to His Son and God gave his Son to us! Forever!
Nothing you will ever do will snatch that Gift from Jesus' hands that is Grace.
Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (39) nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
As for the Divine Exchange, simply stated, Jesus took all of our poverty, our complete and total bankruptcy, diseases, illnesses, failures, shame, guilt and anything else you can think of in exchange for ALL His riches in glory as I have been showing you so far plus countless more promises that are in the Word.
God so loved you…He gave ALL for you that you could have ALL He has, that is the divine exchange!
We have not even begun to fathom all that this exchange entails.
So the next question that arise is the one I addressed at the beginning namely,
Who am I in Christ?
If you don’t understand what I mean by being “in Christ” let me elaborate.
Once you were saved the question is then how does God see me now?
He sees us “in Christ”.
You are going to Love this Savior of mine when I show you this!!!
First of all let’s begin with this; if you are a believer God will never, ever, ever be angry with you again, never! At the Cross Jesus Christ took upon Himself the Wrath of God meant for you and me. Romans 5:9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
What does justified mean? It relates to the justice of God which requires that payment be made for Sin.
Because the greatest attribute of God is that He is Holy and He cannot have fellowship with sinful man.
The Triune God is thrice holy, the Bible says, Isaiah 6:3 (KJV) And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. Furthermore it goes on to say in Rev 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Notice the latter part of the verse in Rev. 4:8, "holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come". Not only is the Triune God thrice holy it also tells us that this attribute extends from the beginning of eternity, throughout the present and will be forever in the future and in this we learn an important point, namely; holiness is the most exalted of all His attributes ( Isaiah 6:3) and the importance of saying it 3 times emphasizes the depth of that holiness and the application to the 3 persons, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, though having equality with each other each has a differen t function but make no mistake, they are each holy, holy, holy! God’s holiness totally saturates His entire being. His holiness represents His moral perfection and His absolute separation from imperfection or flaw of any kind ( (Psalm 92:15"The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him. " )
So what does it mean to be holy?
The idea behind the concept of holiness is "separation." It comes from a word meaning "to separate or cut off”. Let’s look at what the Bible says,
(1 John 1:5) This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. God is separate from everything that is sinful and evil, He cannot tolerate sin. There is no trace of evil in his character. (Isaiah 57:15) For this is what the high and lofty One says - he who lives forever, whose name is holy. (Revelation 15:4) Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.
This is not a simple concept but one that must be addressed in that it will magnify the work of God regarding salvation so I inquired and this is how He taught me.
God actions transcend all the forces of the Universe by virtue of His power as Creator. Although He is Holy and separate from His creation He is involved with every aspect of humanity. The event of Jesus’ sacrifice at the Cross, an act in response to God’s will and divine purpose, also transcends time so its impact is felt from the beginning to the end of time. Furthermore, though written over thousands of years ago the Word is also transcending time and still has the power of salvation even till the end of time quite simply because neither Father God, His Word nor His Plan is limited or defined by time, space or matter. Therefore, since the word Salvation in the Greek, Sózó, is all encompassing, the events of the Cross are just as relevant and powerful today as when they took place and effect not only our spiritual well being but also every other facet of our lives.
Since all of us came into the world in a state of sin, we are all unholy in his sight regardless of any attempt on our part to become holy aside from Christ as Savior.( Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God .)
So in order for a Holy God to have fellowship with unholy men of which all of us qualify as such, Jesus had to go to the Cross to reconcile us with God that we may enjoy fellowship with Our Father.
Look at what the Bible says, Eph 2:13 (NKJV) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (14) For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, (15) having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace , (16) and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. (17)And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. (18) For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. (19) Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
That issue having been taken care of at the Cross where God’s justice was met at Christ expense, because of the shed blood of Christ that saved us, God NO LONGER see you, He only sees Jesus, you and I are hidden now and forever washed whiter than snow covered in the blood. If you understand just a little how much Father God, Abba Daddy, loves Jesus, you will begin to understand how much he loves us and that we are His Beloved! Think of justified as meaning God sees me just-as-if-I-had-never-sinned!
The term justification means "to declare righteous." That is what took place at the Cross. Jesus took not only our sins but all the wrath meant for us as well therefore God will never, ever be angry with you.
For God to pour out now his wrath on us for our sins in light of Jesus having paid for sin, that would make God unrighteous and unjust since that would be double jeopardy. Wrath is punishment with anger; do not confuse God disciplining us with Love which comes without wrath.
Furthermore, because you are justified, declared righteous, then one of the most important verses in the Bible has to be addressed and that verse is Romans 8:1 which says, Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, what exactly does that mean?
One of the most influential authors in my life has been Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones whose brilliant writing explains this concept much better than I could ever.
I am quoting from his book, “Romans, The Law: Its Functions and Limits, Exposition of chapter 7:1-8:4” pages 271-272:
“Romans 8:1 (NIV) ’Therefore, there is now NO condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus’, Paul is saying that a Christian is a person who has been taken entirely outside the realm of any possible or conceivable condemnation. The Christian has finished with the realm of condemnation; he has been taken right out of it; he has nothing more to do with it. There is no condemnation to the Christian ‘now’ and never can be... Not only is the Christian not in a state of condemnation now, he never can be; it is impossible.
There are many who misunderstand this. They seem to think of a Christian as a man who, if he confesses his sin and asks for forgiveness, is forgiven. At that moment he is not under condemnation. But then if he should sin again he is back once more under condemnation. The he repents and confesses his sin again, and asks for pardon, and he is cleansed once more. So to them the Christian is a man who is constantly passing from one state to the other; back and forth; condemned, not condemned. Now that, according to the Apostle, is a wholly mistaken notion, and a complete failure to understand the position. The Christian is a man who can never be condemned; he can never come into a state of condemnation again. ‘No condemnation’! The Apostle is not talking about his experience, but about his position (in Christ), his standing, his status; he is in a position in which, being justified (by faith and not by works), he can never again come under condemnation. This is the meaning of the word ‘No’, it means, ‘Never’”
No means No, Never!
Why is this so important a concept?
Because having the truth in our heart releases us once and for all time of any guilt and shame and makes the individual free, that is the liberty we now have in Christ that will so transform us, will make us so fall in love with Jesus that our heart will be transformed by Grace and when Grace appears it is more than enough! The bondage of sin is broken now and forevermore since the allure of sin has been replaced with the love for Jesus! And where the chains are broken there is Freedom and sin no longer holds the person captive, especially when Satan comes and tries to remind us of our past sins and failures for it is he and not God that attempts to bring up the past to condemn us and should he succeed, then we are defeated despite the victory that has been purchased for us, this is why this is so important you get it.
The importance of this is especially highlighted when we understand that condemnation is the deepest root from where many deadly issues arise concerning our growth, maturity and relationship with Christ and others. Once we are free of this root, we can flourish in Grace and the fruit that comes about will revolutionize our lives and impact others as well and we can change the world through Christ who saved us, that my friends is the revolution of Grace!
Condemnation at its root produces in us a Sin-consciousness which is what Satan wants you to be bound to in order to keep you captive in spite of the work at the Cross. Jesus came that you would develop a righteousness -consciousness, a Grace -consciousness in Christ to set you free! John 8:32 (NKJV) And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. John 8:36 (NKJV) Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Our response is that we are no longer condemned; our sin consciousness, which is driven by the law and a series of do’s and don’ts to get God’s favor, is lost and replaced by a Grace consciousness because we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, based on what He did , not us, that is our standing now and forevermore and nothing we will ever do will negate, void, erase, change or otherwise alter the fact we are righteous of God in Christ Jesus and there is no condemnation !
Once we have been made righteous, nothing will ever change it and if you fail it isn’t the Law that brings you back it is God’s Love and righteousness that allures you instead.
2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Say this right now - I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus!
OK, some of you just read it; be serious, say it! I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus!
Why should I say this verbally, what benefit is there when I can read is as well?
Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Notice it doesn’t say reading, it says hearing and sometimes the only way that happens is when you speak as this is how the Word is deposited in your heart.
You need to say this over and over till the reality of it trumps any condemnation thrown at you and I assure you that it will come as your enemy Satan doesn’t want you to succeed.
How serious am I regarding this?
Doing what I just told you literally saved my life despite unbelievably difficult circumstances that were so difficult and painful NO ONE thought I would survive and at the moment there was no reason to think they were mistaken.
I came as close to dying as anyone could and spent 10 days in ICU, 3 or 4 days in a semi-conscious state bordering on a coma. When my friends found me on the floor of my house, almost in a coma, my blood sugar, which is normally in a range of 80 - 110 had actually risen to 1,700 without any warning or family history. I was literally picked up and put in a car and rushed to the hospital. To make matters worse my heart began beating irregularly and to top it off I got a blood infection so severe that none of the drugs that were given to me for any of these issues were working. If it hadn’t been for the Holy Spirit’s prompting my friends Jeanne and Jay Martin to come to my house I would have most certainly died. But looking back I can see that Grace had a purpose for me and if that purpose is to change just 1 person’s life through what I write here; then it will have been worth it.
Would that person be you?
I was laying there in the hospital and I was at peace if I were to die but I made a choice that I was NOT going to go without a fight, this situation was NOT of God and I am His child, I may not know much but I know who I am in Christ.
For the first 3 or 4 days I was semi-conscious, not really aware of much.
It would have been so easy, it was so tempting to just let go…
One night, I believe around the 4th day, when I was so alone I started crying, I wanted someone to be there with me and there was no one. All I wanted was someone, anyone, to just hold my hand for a little while, help me walk through this excruciating pain I was in, that’s all I wanted…
Since there was no one I did what David did in the Bible, I encouraged myself in the Lord and I started whispering ALL the promises I have taught you so far and then some, that was all I could do or had the energy for, whispering. Over and over again, I must have done it thousands of times. It took some days of doing just this but I came out of there and survived, again a close call!
I spoke the Living Word over and over and over and the Living Word produced Life!
It took me almost a year for my body to begin to function at some semblance of normalcy, it wasn’t easy.
Don’t tell me this isn’t a practical lesson and don’t cheapen it by not paying attention. A day may come when your life may depend on how well you learn this lesson.
Look, let me be frank, I realize that this entire lesson isn’t easy or simple, it was not meant to be but be assured most certainly that it isn’t some intellectual exercise or theological thesis, it is a practical and powerful message, not because of anything I have done but because of who I am in Christ and what He taught me, don’t take it lightly. I can assure you my education in attaining it was not without great expense and taking it to heart might save you some of the cost someday.
We are righteous; we need to be conscious of it always and proclaim outwardly what Christ has deposited in us inwardly this is how the power of the gospel is preached and the evidence of the promises come to light.
I assure you that Satan will try to come against you, he might even try to kill you so be prepared, this isn’t a game.
You become forever righteous the moment you are born again.
All of this happens immediately the moment we accept Christ but not unlike a newborn babe we have to grow and mature, that is where the Holy Spirit applies the Word in our life through guidance, circumstances and relationships with others that collectively sanctify us.
What does sanctify mean?
To sanctify someone or something is to set that person or thing apart for the use intended by its designer, creator .
Because God is holy we are holy, not of our works but Christ’s finished work, we are being sanctified, set apart for His use according to His plan, not ours.
What does Holy mean? We have been set apart, that is what it means.
Therefore in Christ, we can say… I can be holy for He is holy (1 Peter 1:16)
Why has God made us holy and separate?
Rom 8:29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
We are the Body of Christ, He is the Head; we collectively and individually are continuing the work He started so that our lives may glorify Jesus as His life glorified the Father’s and in this process we are being changed into the image of Jesus, therefore 1 John 4:17b (NIV) In this world we are like Jesus.
This is how Jesus is writing an epistle now, 2 Corinthians 3:3 clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.
Think on this for a moment, the only epistle, letter, word some people will ever read is what you demonstrate not necessarily by you words but by you r fruit. This is how I came to search for Jesus Christ when I saw in the lives of my neighbors, Kip and Melissa Johnson the glow they had in Christ that was so evident, I wanted what they had even though I didn’t know they were Christians at the time.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, that was the first epistle God gave me to read , the fruit thereof is what you are learning now! To God be the Glory!
So wherever you go, preach the gospel, if necessary, use words.
When the Bible speaks of this it isn’t changing us all into the same personality with the same traits as some denominations attempt to do according to man’s controlling standards, sanctification into the image of Christ speaks to character according to Christ’s, not personality traits. God created you to be unique but He wants to mold you into the character attributed of Jesus.
What else am I in Christ?
Here is just a PARTIAL list of the thousands of promises we received through the Divine Exchange which collectively tell us how God sees us now…
In Christ, I am… I am forgiven (Col 1:13, 14)… I am saved by Grace through Faith (Ephesians 2:8)…A child of God (Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God) ; a friend of God (John 15:15 "No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.)… I am at peace with God (Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,) I am redeemed from the hand of the enemy and the curse of the Law (Ps 107:2; Gal 3:13)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Cor 5:17)
I am partaker of his divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) I am led by the Spirit of God (Rom 8:14) I am delivered from the powers of darkness and brought into the Kingdom of his Son (Col 1:13).
I am kept in safety wherever I go Jesus commands his angels concerning me to guard me in all my ways (Ps. 91:11) I am casting all my cares on Jesus because he cares for me (1 Peter 5:7).
I am strong in the Lord and the power of his might (Ephesians 6:10) I am doing all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).
I am an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ (Romans 8:17) I am blessed coming in and going out (Deuteronomy 28:6).
I am an inheritor of eternal life and this life is in his Son (1 John 5:11, 12) I am blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).
By his stripes I am healed (1 Peter 2:24).
I am more than a conqueror in Jesus name (Romans 8:37). Let me explain this one since you have to wonder how I can be more than a conqueror. This speaks to Jesus being the victor in ALL the circumstances you face, all of them! His salvation is a continuous expression of his love and intimacy with you and not simply a onetime event. In ancient times the warrior king would go to battle and having won, as Jesus did at the Cross, he brought ALL the spoils back to the family of which we are a part of. So He has already won the battle you are facing, He will bring the spoils home to you, that is what that verse means, it is not by your efforts you receive it is by His. That is how you are more than a conqueror! He did the work, we receive the benefits!
I am an overcomer by the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony (Rev 12:11).
I am daily overcoming; greater is he that is within me than the one who is in the world (1John 4:4).
I am living by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) I am no longer conforming to the pattern of this world, but I am being transformed by the renewing of my mind (Romans 12:1, 2).
I am a laborer together with God (1 Corinthians 3:9). I am being conformed into the image of his Son (Romans 8:29) In Christ who dwells in me I am the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).
As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed my transgressions from me (Ps 103:12).
In Christ and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. (Col. 2:10) For sin shall not have dominion over me, for I am not under law but under grace.( Rom 6:14).
Praise God!!! I am all these things and more in Christ Jesus!
As Christ is so are we in this world (1John 4:17).
As God’s Grace and Truth of His Word, become more deeply rooted in me, the greater will be my knowledge of who I really am in Christ Jesus and His finished work at the Cross.
It is in that deepening intimacy that comes when I abide in Him and Him in me; all things are now possible for those who are in Christ Jesus!
This is how God sees me now. This is what being “in Christ” means. This is just the beginning!
It is because Jesus is in me that I am in Christ, It is not on my own, to Him be the Glory, and Honor and Praise!
Christ in me, I am in Him, In Christ I am all of this and more by virtue of Grace, God’s unmerited favor and the finished work of the Cross .
I can say so because I am born again in Christ Jesus!
In this webpage I have added a worksheet entitled “in Christ” which is under the section on Discipleship, print it and place it in your Bible or somewhere you can refer to it, I use mine and it is a great reminder. Now that worksheet is an abbreviated listing, not as detailed as this lesson, but valuable nonetheless, copy and share with others.
In conclusion let me summarize some key points.
Father God purposed and willed Salvation for you and me out of his deep love for us.
For God so loved He gave.
God’s Word is the progressive revelation of Himself to us beckoning for a relationship with us, His beloved.
Father spoke and named His Son Salvation, Jesus is His name, Christ the Anointed One.
It was Jesus' great love for you and me that revealed the Father to us and secured Abba Father’s Great Salvation at great cost to Himself for us.
It is finished!
He then sent the Holy Spirit to us to apply the finished work of Christ which pours out the promises and blessings in the Word which are our great inheritance resulting in Father now seeing us in Christ and saved from every situation that may arise so that we can lead a life abundant and be witnesses of the resurrection power of the gospel by virtue of being “in Christ.”
This that I have shared with you is but a glimpse of who you are in Christ, there is so much more!
Now I can tell you these next points with both seriousness and humor.
This lesson that God gave me for you is just the beginning and though the Bible is His Word it is simply the beginning of the revelation of who Jesus Christ is. You really didn’t think that all of what God is can be summarized in just one book did you?
Eternity in Heaven will consist of unending and greater revelations of who Jesus Christ is in relation to us, intimate, precious moments where He will share not only corporate revelations to the Body, yes we will have those, but more importantly, personal ongoing revelations with each and every one of us as well, private intimate moments just for us.
Our Lord Jesus is so great and glorious that He will share personal intimate individual moments with each of us without taking away anything from someone else, precious moments between just He and us that will be a continuation of the personal relationship He began with each of us here on Earth.
This will be intimacy to such a depth and so powerfully glorious that without a glorified body we could not contain the presence of the Lord and the unspeakable joy we will experience it is that powerful and that will be our condition for eternity.
By the way, when you get to heaven you will notice there are no shadows for His light is so powerful and so enveloping that though there are structures and people nothing blocks the Light that normally causes shadows! The Laws of Physics we are familiar here do not apply there in His dimension. That is why the Cross and His Word are still effective.
How did he reveal this to me? I can’t tell you, those were my intimate moments!
Trust me; you don’t want to miss yours. Go seek!
The Love of God poured out for you and me.
Grow now in Jesus name.
I pray most earnestly that His lesson has been able to bless and feed you, now go find someone to share it with and bring them to Christ and help them grow as well.
Be Blessed in Christ, You are loved.
As for this lesson…
“It is finished!”
